The StrokesI’ll Try Anything Once – Heart in a Cage single (B-side) • 2006

This one was found watching Sofia Coppola’s movie Somewhere the other week. I was in the mood for some mood food, and Sofia Coppola’s movies are pretty much exactly that. I think the only one I’ve not seen is The Virgin Suicides at this point, and that’s because I don’t want to be depressed – I’ve got Darren Aronofsky’s films if I want to watch something beautiful and depressing.

Anyway.

I fell in love with this song when I heard it being played prominently in the preview, and was not disappointed to find it played almost in entirety in the film itself. This morning I woke up with it crooning in my head and knew I had to have another listen. Searching for it brought up a lot of fan videos, but I think this one is by far my favorite.

According to the info section, it was shot using a Super 16 and the guys who did it played around with the film somewhat as well. I love it. I just wish I had the time and money to play around with film cameras. I’d probably make fan videos for music I love all day. Ha.

As far as The Strokes go I can generally take ‘em or leave ‘em most of the time, but this song is just fantastic. This simply proves yet again my love for off-stylistic B-sides that bands produce.

There aren’t really any words for this post. Just a huge dump of various stuff that hasn’t gotten posted on here, plus the last batch is from a walk I took earlier today. I am considering selling the bookmarks in the one picture above, or bookmarks like them. Those were prototypes.

GrimesOblivian – Visions • 2012

I love SoundHound. Seriously. It has helped me find so many songs that I would have otherwise not had a clue about because of having to turn the radio off before the announcer break or other reasons. Grimes was one of the artists I kept hearing and recognizing a sound to but never quite got to the point where I could hear the name of the song that was played. Instead, at one point, I remembered that I had SoundHound on my phone and whipped it out in time to catch a bit of the song, which it happily identified for me.

Thus began an intense relationship with her music.
Not seriously, but I do enjoy the dreamy, wistful and nearly incoherent singing paired with the synthetic music. I also have a huge crush on her hair. Yes. Her hair.

My posting has been sporadic/nonexistent the past few weeks. There are some changes going on with the direction things are going. Once everything is settled, I will probably sit down and make a catch-up post and perhaps talk about that a bit.

Fiona AppleAcross the Universe (Beatles cover) – Pleasantville OST • 1998

When I was younger I didn’t like this cover much, for some reason. I preferred the original to it by far. These days, though, I think of it (and other songs from singers like Fiona Apple, An DiFranco, Tori Amos, etc. and so on) and go “I sure wish our record industry these days was giving more mainstream coverage to the independently voiced female artists there are out today.

Because, don’t get me wrong, there are still fantastic female artists – whether single or in groups of more than one – who are releasing amazing music. Yet, for some reason, these days, that sort of thing is again relegated to the field of indie music. No one wants to hear a woman singing about more than schoolgirl crushes and basic broken hearts these days, it would seem.

I never really considered myself a feminist at any point in my life, but the extreme lack of of female voices that are saying anything other than “I need a man in my life” in mainstream music, once again, is just goddamn depressing. It is equally depressing the the male side is mostly all about needing to conquer/overcome their female counterparts, with a smaller group of broken hearts. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of things I enjoy about mainstream music (as I enjoy basically all music), but a little more variety wouldn’t be amiss.
